This product is currently sold out.
After working on seaweed research for more than 18 months, Nienke has collected all her findings in a book. During her quest to use seaweed to create a more sustainable textile industry, she was charmed by the beauty of seaweed as well as its great qualities. In this book she explains the differences between types of seaweed—illustrated with beautiful photos—and shows how it can be used in textiles. She hopes to inspire others to believe in this material that has so much potential.
Studio Nienke Hoogvliet is a design studio for material research, experimental and conceptual design.
The studio consists of the founder Nienke Hoogvliet (1989) and Tim Jongerius (1988). Nienke graduated from Lifestyle & Design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam. Tim graduated from the faculty of Architecture at the TU Delft.
The studio engages in freelance projects for different companies and institutions but also continues research in self-initiated design projects. The studio is based in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Since the studio was founded in 2013 we have a main focus on materials that can contribute to a more holistic world. The projects raise awareness of social and environmental problems in the textile, leather and food industry. By creating innovative alternatives they hope to change perspectives and systems.
Nienke grew up near the beach, her connection to the ocean was the foundation of the research into seaweed and fish skin. In the project SEA ME the studio researches how seaweed can contribute to a more sustainable textile industry. Although the research is ongoing, the findings were published in the books "Seaweed Research" and "Fish Leather".
The work of Studio Nienke Hoogvliet has been exhibited worldwide in institutions like Artipelag, Stockholm | Centre Pompidou, Parijs | Centraal Museum, Utrecht | Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, New York | Textielmuseum, Tilburg | Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
